Project Synopsis

MedID is a free emergency medical ID card for Sri Lanka, designed and built in-house at DEEESIGN;. It is a printed wallet card carrying a QR code and a PIN: a paramedic or doctor scans it at the roadside and sees the blood type, allergies, medicines, conditions and emergency contacts of the person in front of them. The record lives online, so details stay current without ever reprinting the card.

Design Challenge

An NIC or driving licence proves who you are, but tells a first responder nothing about how to treat you, and in an emergency the patient is often the one person who cannot answer. Any solution had to work in the worst conditions: a stranger holding the card, no app to install, a phone on a weak connection, and three languages in play. It also had to earn medical trust, which meant giving people exact control over which details a scan reveals and which stay private.

Creative Approach

We designed the card around a scan-and-PIN flow that any phone camera can start, with no app and no account for the responder. Every field in the personal health record carries its own Emergency, Private or Only-me setting, so a person decides exactly what a scan reveals. The interface runs in Sinhala, Tamil and English, the printed card repeats its instructions in all three, and blood type can be printed directly on the card as a fallback when there is no mobile signal. A clinical red-and-white system, high-contrast typography and a print-at-home A4 PDF keep the whole thing free to produce.

Product Impact

MedID gives Sri Lankan road users, patients with chronic conditions and elderly family members a medical record a responder can reach in seconds, at no cost. Families can hold cards for parents and children in one account, details update online without a reprint, and every scan is logged for the cardholder to review. It is our clearest example of public-interest product design: an accessible, multilingual health tool built to work under pressure.
