WordPress vs Next.js for Business Websites

WordPress powers a huge share of the web, and for good reason. Next.js, usually paired with a headless CMS, has become the stack of choice for companies that care about speed and flexibility. Both can produce an excellent business website. The right choice depends on what you need the site to do and who will maintain it.

We build on Next.js, so we have a view, but we will be fair to both.

The short version

  • Choose WordPress if you want the widest choice of themes and plugins, plan to manage the site yourself with minimal developer help, and speed is not critical.
  • Choose Next.js with a headless CMS if speed, security and long-term flexibility matter, you want a custom design, and you have a developer or agency to build and extend it.

How they differ

WordPress is an all-in-one system: the content editor, the database and the page templates live together on one server. Themes control the design and plugins add features.

Next.js is a framework for building the front end of a website. Content is managed in a separate headless CMS, such as Payload, Sanity or Contentful, and the site is generated from it. Editing and presentation are decoupled.

Speed

A well-built WordPress site can be fast. In practice, many are slowed down by heavy page builders, multiple plugins and shared hosting. Next.js pre-renders pages, optimises images and splits code automatically, so sites tend to be fast by default and pass Core Web Vitals more easily. Speed matters for search rankings and even more for conversions. See our guide to Core Web Vitals.

Security and maintenance

WordPress's popularity makes it the most targeted CMS on the web. Most problems come from outdated plugins and themes, so a WordPress site needs regular updates and backups. A Next.js site has a much smaller attack surface: there is often no public admin login on the main site and far fewer third-party plugins to keep patched.

Editing content

WordPress's editor is familiar to many people and lets non-technical users build pages with blocks. A good headless CMS is just as easy for everyday editing, such as updating pages, writing blog posts and swapping images, but adding a completely new type of page layout usually needs a developer.

SEO

Both can rank well. WordPress relies on plugins such as Yoast or Rank Math to manage titles, sitemaps and schema. With Next.js these are built into the site itself. The bigger SEO factors, such as content quality, structure, speed and links, depend on how the site is built and maintained rather than the platform.

Cost

WordPress can be cheaper to start with, especially with a pre-made theme. Custom WordPress builds and Next.js builds cost similar amounts, because the work is mostly design and development either way. Over time, Next.js sites often cost less to maintain because there are fewer plugins to update and fewer security issues to fix.

When WordPress is the better choice

  • You need a site fast and on a tight budget, and a theme is acceptable
  • You rely on a specific WordPress plugin, such as a niche booking or membership tool
  • You want to build new page layouts yourself without a developer

When Next.js is the better choice

  • Speed and Core Web Vitals matter to your search visibility and conversions
  • You want a fully custom design that does not fight a theme
  • You need integrations, portals or app-like features alongside the marketing site
  • You want lower security risk and less plugin maintenance

Frequently asked questions

Can I move from WordPress to Next.js without losing SEO?

Yes, with a proper redirect map and by carrying over content, titles and structured data. Our guide on redesigning without losing rankings covers the process.

Can WordPress be used as a headless CMS with Next.js?

Yes. Headless WordPress keeps the familiar editor while Next.js renders the public site, which suits teams that know WordPress but want better speed.

Is Next.js harder for my team to update?

Not for everyday content. A headless CMS handles text, images and blog posts just as easily. New page layouts are the main thing that needs a developer.

How we build

Every site we ship is built on Next.js with a headless CMS your team can use, with SEO built into the structure from day one. Read more about our website development service, or if you already have a slow WordPress site, see our website redesign service.
